“Strains of classical music will fill the air this weekend in a town known primarily for bluegrass,” writes Mike Allen in Wednesday’s (5/17) Roanoke Times (Virginia). “There will, however, be a dash of mandolin in the Classical Music in the Mountains performances that takes place Friday through Sunday in Floyd, organized by the Virginia’s Blue Ridge Musical Festival. The events kick off Friday at 6 p.m. with a free brass ensemble concert at Hotel Floyd. Saturday at 10 a.m. the music resumes with a free string duo performance at Floyd Community Market. Roanoke composer and musician Jeff Midkiff … will lead an improvisation workshop Saturday at 3 p.m. at the June Bug Center…. Sunday at 3 p.m. in the Celebration Hall of Floyd EcoVillage, Roanoke Symphony Orchestra music director David Stewart Wiley will lead a ‘Bach to Bluegrass’ concert that features Bach and Dohnanyi. Midkiff will join the musicians on stage for the Virginia premiere of one of his original compositions, ‘Gypsy.’ A reception follows.”
