“Make Music New York, the non-profit behind an expansive one-day music festival that takes over the city on the first day of summer, has issued a plea for emergency financial aid before its forthcoming edition on June 21,” writes Robin Scher in Tuesday’s (6/6) ARTNews (N.Y., N.Y.). “In the run-up to this year’s festivities—which typically enlist an array of musicians playing everything from art-rock and punk to opera and jazz in public spaces around New York’s five boroughs from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m.—the organization was informed it would not be receiving an expected $20,000 funding grant, leaving it short of $10,000 needed to cover expenses…. Operating expenses for a festival of the kind include 145 sound permits at $45 each (for a total cost of $6,525) as well as $1,706 to maintain general liability insurance coverage … and $2,000 to print program guides. A donation page has been set up at the Make Music New York website.” Among planned events this year are 49 Flutes, commemorating the 40th anniversary of John Cage’s 49 Waltzes for the Five Boroughs; and WTC @ WTC, three hours of performances by multiple pianists of Bach’s The Well-Tempered Clavier at the 9/11 Memorial in Manhattan.
