Philadelphia’s Orchestra 2001 will open 2017-18—the orchestra’s 30th season—with a one-hour concert of music by Peter Maxwell Davies and George Crumb, the local composer most closely associated with its 30-year history. Tonight, September 12, at 10 p.m. at Philadelphia’s Painted Bride Art Center, conductor Jayce Ogren will lead the orchestra in a staged performance of Peter Maxwell Davies’s 1969 monodrama Eight Songs for a Mad King, about King George III, with baritone Randall Scarlata in the title role. Also on the program will be Crumb’s 2001 piano work Eine Kleine Mitternachtmusik (A Little Midnight Music), inspired by Thelonious Monk’s “ ‘Round Midnight,” with pianist Marcantonio Barone.
