Canada’s Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra has received two donations totaling $1 million to launch a new endowment fund in support of Sistema Winnipeg, a free daily, intensive music education program of the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in partnership with Seven Oaks School Division and Winnipeg School Division. The funds were donated by long-time supporters Tannis Richardson and the Michael Nozick family, each donating $500,000. Both gifts will be eligible for matching funds from the Canadian Cultural Investment Fund, resulting in a potential $2 million addition to the Sistema endowment fund. “We are tremendously grateful to Michael Nozick and his family for this groundbreaking gift to our Sistema Winnipeg program,” said Executive Director Trudy Schroeder. Sistema Winnipeg Manager Shannon Darby said, “The creation of an endowment fund is the first step towards sustainable, renewable funding for the program, which means we can focus our priorities on offering the best student experience. It enables us to look at new opportunities for growth, to enroll more students, and to develop a comprehensive program for our students entering high school…. Our students understand a contribution like this means that they are involved in something special.”
