On December 2, the Civic Orchestra of Tucson will travel 65 miles west of Tucson to perform a free afternoon concert in Sells, the capital of the Tohono O’odham Nation. The program at the Sells Recreation Center will be preceded by a musical instrument petting zoo. The orchestra will also perform a free program on December 3 at the Tucson Jewish Community Center. Both concerts will feature Michael Horwood’s Amusement Park Ride, a fifteen-minute orchestral suite with movements titled “Dark Ride,” “Log Flume,” “Carousel,” and “Roller Coaster.” Also on the program will be short selections by Rossini, Handel, and Mendelssohn, plus Haydn’s Symphony No. 94 (“Surprise”). The Civic Orchestra of Tucson, conducted by Dr. Herschel Kreloff since 1980, is a 65-member, all-volunteer community orchestra that has performed free concerts throughout the greater Tucson area since 1975.
