“The Dallas Morning News has entered into a partnership with the San Francisco-based Rubin Institute for Music Criticism that will help support its commitment to coverage of classical music,” writes Michael Granberry in Thursday’s (11/30) Dallas Morning News. “The newspaper initiative began about a year ago with pilot partner, The Boston Globe…. San Francisco Bay Area philanthropist Gordon Getty linked up with David H. Stull, president of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and Stephen Rubin, benefactor of the Rubin Institute…. Together, they set up a partnership … funded through the Ann and Gordon Getty Foundation. The program is designed, [Rubin Institute Program Director Jessica] Downs says, ‘to grant money to newspapers that are either reducing or eliminating classical music coverage.’ … The institute has established partnerships with the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Houston Chronicle … Star Tribune in Minneapolis … Toronto Star and San Francisco Classical Voice,” and beginning in January, The Seattle Times. “ ‘Typically, we support around 85 percent of a freelance position,’ Downs says … ‘The Boston Globe and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette are very committed to keeping a full-time music critic, and so we were able to offer just enough that they were able to make up the rest.’ ”
