“When Russell Jones came across an advertisement for a position with the Stamford Symphony, he knew instantly it would be his next job,” writes Liz Skalka in last Wednesday’s (12/27) Stamford Advocate (CT). “In late fall, the symphony announced that Jones would succeed Barbara Smith-Soroca as president and CEO of the ensemble, which has been the resident orchestra of the Palace Theatre since the 1980s, continuing to thrive amid a challenging climate for classical music. For Jones, 57, that meant moving from New York City, where he served as director of major gifts at the New York Philharmonic, a position that helped develop many of the skills Jones would eventually use in Stamford—marketing, fundraising, management…. Jones … was born in London and … worked for the Association of British Orchestras before [joining] the League of American Orchestras, a national service organization for the industry…. Jones said another facet of his mission is promoting the orchestra to the next generation of patrons…. ‘We’re playing some of the most amazing creations man has ever invented…. We just need to find more varied and creative vehicles for people to really enjoy it.’ ”
