Miami in Movements, premiered by the New World Symphony in October 2017 and performed in revised form on February 3, is “a fascinating cross-pollination by composer Ted Hearne and filmmaker Jonathan David Kane of symphonic score, nature sounds, and exquisitely edited, crowd-sourced video, much of which is synced in real time to the baton of … Michael Tilson Thomas, founding artistic director of the New World Symphony…. Miami in Movements is the end result of Project 305 (named after Miami’s area code) by which local denizens were invited to submit audio and video of their ‘own personal experiences of living in the County.’ … Augmenting the 1,000 clips received, Hearne and Kane set up a mobile recording studio in a van and traveled to especially under-represented areas to capture video interviews with random folk off the street…. The final result is a seamless whole, punctuated by silence from the orchestra and an occasional blank wall for emphasis.”
