In Friday’s (11/6) Times Call (Longmont, Colorado), Quentin Young writes, “When Yuri Boguinia was 14 years old, he performed in a piano recital organized for students of his teacher, Shirley Gendreizig. The music he played for the gathered students and family members was a set of waltzes he had written himself. It was the first time he had played one of his own compositions in public. … Today Boguinia (pronounced bo-GEEN-yah) is an 18-year-old composition student at Interlochen Arts Academy, a fine arts high school in Michigan. … Yuri’s composing career will take a leap forward this month. Four years after that piano recital, the Longmont Symphony Orchestra will give one of his newest works its world premiere Nov. 14. The work was inspired by ‘The Steadfast Tin Soldier,’ a story by Hans Christian Andersen about a one-legged soldier who falls in love with a paper ballerina. The story ends as the lovers are burned together in a stove. Despite his preference for contemporary styles, he tried to make his ‘Tin Soldier’ piece ‘accessible,’ he said, adding that it’s one of his ‘more orthodox’ and ‘tonal’ works.’ ”
