“At Spring Valley Science Elementary School, on San Francisco’s Nob Hill, a small crowd of third-graders is chanting in unison, gleefully … In front of them, the band Brass Roots is leading them in call-and-response,” writes Brandon Yu in Sunday’s (5/6) San Francisco Chronicle. “It’s one locale within the performance’s wide-ranging presentation of brass music…. The mini-tour of global sound is part of the San Francisco Symphony’s Adventures in Music program…. Celebrating its 30th anniversary this year as a partnership between the Symphony and the San Francisco Unified School District, AIM provides robust music education programming every year, free of charge, to every San Francisco public school student between first and fifth grades…. The program provides lesson plans and materials … incorporating them into the curriculum and Common Core Standards. Each year, the program culminates in a class trip to a San Francisco Symphony performance … at Davies Symphony Hall.” At the Chinese Education Center Elementary School, which “primarily educates newcomer students from China, AIM can be particularly rewarding.… The program has become more culturally responsive, [says school principal Victor] Tam … providing a broad palette of musical traditions beyond a simply Euro-centric scope and reflecting the city’s diverse population.”
