Eighteen New York City students will perform in a free May 30 concert at the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center, as part of an ongoing collaboration between the New York Philharmonic and the Harmony Program, which provides free music instruction and instruments to 300 low-income kindergarten-to-high-school students. Philharmonic Assistant Conductor Joshua Gersen will lead the concert, featuring students in the program’s All Stars Ensemble, which is designed to provide a more personal and in-depth collaboration between Philharmonic musicians and the Harmony Program’s more serious students. The All Stars Ensemble musicians were recommended by their Harmony Program instructors, and then two rounds of auditions were held, one in front of a panel of Philharmonic musicians. This year’s ensemble consists of four high school students and fourteen elementary and middle school students from twelve schools in Manhattan, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Long Island. The Philharmonic and the Harmony Program have been formally partnered since 2013, and launched the All Stars Initiative in 2015. Founded in 2003, the Harmony Program is a nonprofit that brings intensive after-school music programs to communities with limited access to instrumental music education.
