JULIAN KUERTI has been named music director of Michigan’s Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra, effective with the 2018-2019 season. He succeeds Raymond Harvey, who ended his eighteen-year tenure in 2017. Kuerti was born in Toronto, Canada; his father is pianist Anton Kuerti. Julian Kuerti began his musical training on the violin and while completing an honors degree in engineering and physics at the University of Toronto, performed as concertmaster and soloist with Canadian orchestras. In 2000, he began conducting studies at the University of Toronto, continuing at the Pierre Monteux School for Conductors; the American Academy of Conductors in Aspen, CO; Canada’s NAC Conductor’s program; Tanglewood in Massachusetts; and the University of the Arts Berlin. He has served as principal guest conductor of the Orchestre Métropolitain de Montreal and principal conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica Universidad de Concepción in Chile. Kuerti has also served as assistant conductor at the Boston Symphony Orchestra and Budapest Festival Orchestra, and as founding artistic director of Berlin’s Solistenensemble Kaleidoskop. Recent highlights include concerts with the Kalamazoo Symphony and the Sydney Symphony Orchestra; a new production of Rusalka with Teatro Colon; and Hindemith, Barber, and Beethoven with Deutsche Radio Symphony.
