The Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra in Texas has announced the appointment of KEITH CERNY as president and CEO, effective January 11, 2019. He goes to the symphony from Canada’s Calgary Opera, which he joined as general director and CEO in January of 2018. He led the Dallas Opera as general director and CEO from 2010 to 2018, and was executive director and CFO of the San Francisco Opera from 2004 to 2007. Cerny commenced his musical studies singing with the San Francisco Boys Chorus and began playing piano at age 10. After graduating in music and physics from the University of California at Berkeley, Cerny was awarded a Fulbright fellowship to London, where he studied and freelanced as a pianist, vocal coach, and conductor. He studied conducting at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and attended the repetiteur’s training course at the English National Opera. He received an MBA from the Harvard Business School, and a Ph.D. in econometrics and development policy from the Open University in the U.K. He worked for the management consulting firms McKinsey & Co. and Accenture. At the Dallas Opera, he founded the Hart Institute for Women Conductors in 2015.
