“The National Alliance for Audition Support—that’s seven hundred orchestras plus several nonprofits—has launched a training and funding project to get classical musicians of color into the auditions” at orchestras, states Nadege Green in a Thursday (8/30) radio segment at American Public Media’s Marketplace. Green reports on the National Alliance for Audition Support coaching sessions that took place in June at the New World Symphony in Miami Beach, discusses the challenges Black and Latinx orchestral musicians face, and interviews musicians of color about the audition intensive. NAAS is made up of The Sphinx Organization, the lead program and fiscal administrator for the Alliance; the New World Symphony, America’s Orchestral Academy; and the League of American Orchestras, representing 700 orchestras. NAAS is supported by a four-year grant of $1.8 million from The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation as well as contributions from orchestras across the U.S.
