In Thursday’s (11/19) Denver Business Journal, Mark Harden reports, “Colorado Public Radio (CPR) said Wednesday it will stage an unusual three-day on-air fundraising drive for the Colorado Symphony Orchestra (CSO) that will include a live broadcast of a CSO performance featuring cellist Yo-Yo Ma. Centennial-based CPR operates news station KCFR-FM and classical-music station KVOD. The fund drive will run on CPR’s stations Nov. 30-Dec. 2, with the sold-out CSO/Ma concert at Boettcher Concert Hall broadcast live on the 2nd. ‘Colorado Public Radio recognizes the CSO’s unique role as one of Colorado’s key cultural assets and petitioned the Federal Communications Corporation for permission to conduct a one-time only, on-air fundraising drive to support its major classical music provider, the Colorado Symphony,’ CPR President Max Wycisk said in a statement Wednesday. … Permission for the one-time-only fundraising drive ‘was based on the CSO’s financial need and history of CPR’s reliance upon the CSO for a major portion of its on-air program content,’ CPR said in the statement. … The CSO, like other symphonies and cultural groups, has suffered from a decrease in donations during the economic downturn and cut its most recent budget by about $2.5 million.”
