The Richmond Symphony has announced six candidates to succeed Music Director Steven Smith, who will step down at the end of the 2018-19 season. They are Ankush Kumar Bahl, Paolo Bortolameolli, Roderick Cox, Laura Jackson, Farkhad Khudyev, and Valentina Peleggi. Each of the candidates will spend two weeks in Richmond, Virginia during the 2019-20 season, where in addition to conducting multiple concerts they will participate in public events, speak to city leaders, and be involved in the orchestra’s community engagement and education activities. The next music director will be announced at the end of the 2019-20 season. Three of the candidates participated in the League of American Orchestras’ Bruno Walter National Conductor Preview: Jackson (2009), Cox (2016), and Bahl (2018).
