The thirteenth annual Chicago Latino Music Festival will take place from October 17 to November 18 at venues throughout the city. The festival showcases classical music and celebrates Spanish and Latin American composers from the colonial period to today, with works often inspired by their Afro-Cuban, tango, flamenco, and other roots from the Caribbean and Mexico to the Río de la Plata. Highlights will include the world premiere of an electroacoustic piece from Yucatan-based composer Javier Álvarez created with Chicago-based Latina Girls Code and the People’s Music School; Ensemble CONCEPT/21’s musical exploration of the influence of Latin roots in new American music; Fifth House Ensemble’s modern interpretation of a Puerto Rican folktale inspired by true stories of Chicagoans; and Baroque colonial music of Peru. Performers include KAIA String Quartet, Fulcrum Point New Music Project, and guitarists Fareed Haque, Iván Reséndiz, and Goran Ivanovic. The Chicago Latino Music Festival is a program of the International Latino Cultural Center of Chicago. The festival commissions new pieces from Latino composers, features new and historical works, and has a residency program for chamber ensembles and soloists. It is co-produced by Gustavo Leone and Elbio Barilari. Click here for more information.
