The New York City-based American Composers Orchestra, which is dedicated to the creation and performance of orchestral music by American composers, is currently being featured on WNET television’s NYC-ARTS series. The episode reports on American Composers Orchestra’s annual Underwood New Music Readings and ACO’s Compose Yourself! education program; the two initiatives provide multiple points of access to the orchestra for composers at different stages of their education and careers. The segment may be watched free of charge here. American Composers Orchestra opens its 2018-19 season on Friday, November 2 at Carnegie Hall’s Zankel Hall with a program titled Phenomenal Women. Conducted by Music Director George Manahan, the concert will feature two world premieres: Valerie Coleman’s Phenomenal Women performed by the Imani Winds with ACO, and Alex Temple’s Three Principles of Noir with singer Meaghan Burke, director Amber Treadway, and costumes by Storm Garner. Joan Tower’s 2006 Chamber Dance, which treats the orchestra as a chamber ensemble, completes the program and marks the composer’s eightieth birthday year.
