The new home of the Brattleboro Music Center in Brattleboro, Vermont has been awarded an New England AIA Design award, after Scott Simons Architects adapted a former elementary school into a school for teaching chamber music to children in 2017. Brattleboro Music Center, founded in 1976, was formerly housed in an old convent using the nuns’ cells as practice rooms. The new space has a recital hall and 224-seat chamber hall, and is used by more than 400 students and 30 faculty members for instrumental and vocal-music instruction. The space also houses the Windham Orchestra, Concert Choir, and Blanche Moyse Chorale. The designers focused on maintaining the existing building footprint and adding a new recital hall and practice studios, as well as adding a new performance hall designed for the acoustical needs of classical chamber music, with varied interior surfaces, absorptive rear wall, and a balcony.
