“Several of Savannah’s cultural arts groups were celebrated Friday at the 2nd Annual Superintendent’s Gala for the Arts,” writes Ann Meyer in Monday’s (12/10) Savannah Morning News (GA). “The Savannah Philharmonic Orchestra was named the 2018 Gala for the Arts Honoree for Performing Arts…. The Savannah Philharmonic’s Orchestra Lab has worked with Savannah-Chatham County students in grades six to 12 at selected schools. This year, it is expanding with [Carnegie Hall’s] Link Up program for students in grades three through five…. The Savannah Philharmonic expanded the education and community outreach coordinator position from part time to full time.… During the school year, [education and community outreach coordinator Kristen] Spiridon meets with band directors to determine what they want to accomplish with their students. Then the Philharmonic’s professional musicians work directly with the music directors and Savannah-Chatham County students…. The Orchestra Lab’s … Keep the Music Playing program donates instruments to students in Title I schools. Philharmonic musicians visit students at SCCPSS students to provide instruction on how to play and how to care for the instruments.” Savannah Philharmonic Executive Director Terri O’Neil said, “We want to do our part in ensuring classical music continues to thrive and impacts future generations.”
