“As a way of celebrating his fifth season as music director of the Signature Symphony at Tulsa Community College, Andrés Franco will devote a good portion of the orchestra’s 2019-2020 Classics season to ‘Famous Fifths,’ ” writes James D. Watts, Jr. in Thursday’s (4/4) Tulsa World (OK). “These include Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5 in C Minor … along with the fifth symphonies of Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich. The five concerts of the orchestra’s upcoming Pops series will feature performances by ‘American Idol’ finalist LaKisha Jones, a special tribute to legendary Tulsa jazz artist and bandleader Ernie Fields Sr., and the third edition of the popular Tulsa Sings! contest…. Franco said, while there is no overarching theme to the concerts for this season as there has been in the past, there are some subtle connections that link certain shows together. ‘The three fifth symphonies we will be performing … all in some way changed or influenced the idea of what a symphony is,’ Franco said…. The Classics season will conclude with a work that has not been performed in Tulsa before: ‘Das Lied von der Erde (Song of the Earth)’ by Gustav Mahler.”
