The Indianapolis Chamber Orchestra will open its 2019-20 season in October with a program entitled “Immigration and the Golden Age of Hollywood,” led by Music Director Matthew Kraemer. The concert will feature Peter Boyer’s Ellis Island: The Dream of America, and pianist Sean Chen will perform as soloist in Miklós Rózsa’s Spellbound Concerto; also on the program will be Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Theme and Variations and Franz Waxman’s The Paradine Case, Rhapsody for Piano and Orchestra. A holiday program will feature Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and Part I of Handel’s Messiah. Also planned during the season are a screening of the 1931 film Frankenstein featuring Boris Karloff and Colin Clive, with the orchestra performing Michael Shapiro’s contemporary score live. The orchestra will mark Beethoven’s 250th with a performance of the opera Fidelio with vocal soloists and chorus. Also planned during the season are Michael Daugherty’s Trail of Tears with flute soloist Amy Porter, Brahms’s Double Concerto for Violin and Cello with Andres Cardenes joined by ICO Principal Cello Marjorie Lange Hanna. The ICO and the Prism Saxophone Quartet will perform the world premiere of a concerto by James Aikman commissioned by the quartet.
