YOOSHIN SONG has been appointed concertmaster of the Houston Symphony, beginning in the 2019−20 season. She succeeds Frank Huang, who left the Houston Symphony at the end of the 2015−16 season to become concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic. Song most recently appeared with the Houston Symphony in November 2018 as guest concertmaster, and she will perform with the orchestra this May. Since 2012, Song has been concertmaster of the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Song was born in South Korea, where she began musical studies at age 5, made her solo debut with the Seoul Philharmonic at age 11, and won many national competitions. She has since performed in Korea, the United States, and Europe. Career highlights include top awards in violin competitions in Italy, Poland, Germany, and the U.S. As a soloist, she has performed with orchestras including the Detroit Symphony, Houston Symphony, Utah Symphony, New Mexico Philharmonic, Bayreuth Festival Orchestra, and Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra. She has appeared as a soloist and chamber musician in U.S. and international music festivals. Song will spend three weeks in fall 2019 as concertmaster of the Budapest Festival Orchestra on tour in Vienna, London, Baden-Baden, and Hamburg.
