The Symphony of Southeast Texas has announced that a memorial service for Yu Zhao Gu, a longtime violinist with the orchestra, will take place on April 30 at Calder Baptist Church in Beaumont. Gu died during the orchestra’s April 6 concert. Next season, the orchestra will offer a free memorial concert on January 26, 2020 as a tribute to Gu, with programming to be announced at a later date. The orchestra will perform Ravel’s Daphnis and Chloe and Faure’s Requiem—two pieces on the uncompleted April 6 concert program—at concerts in September 2019 and February 2020, respectively. In a press release, Music Director Chelsea Tipton II expressed his gratitude to the community for the outpouring of support for the Symphony of Southeast Texas, and thanked the medical and emergency professionals who rushed to Gu’s side in an attempt to save his life.
