“The Minnesota Orchestra announced Wednesday night that music director Osmo Vänskä has been appointed music director of the Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra,” writes Kathy Berdan in Wednesday’s (5/1) Pioneer Press (Minnesota). “According to the Minnesota Orchestra, Vänskä will take up the position in January 2020, holding it concurrently with his position in Minnesota. His Seoul Philharmonic contract is for three years. Vänskä’s new role will not change his commitment in Minnesota. He will continue to be based in Minneapolis and to lead the same number of concert, tour and recording weeks with the Minnesota Orchestra as anticipated. In the orchestral industry, it is common for conductors to hold multiple music director posts simultaneously, according to the announcement. Vänskä said he hopes to build connections between the Minnesota Orchestra and the musicians in Seoul.”
