“When what first was called Dallas City Performance Hall opened in 2012, I immediately thought this 750-seat facility, with adjustable acoustics, would be great for a chamber orchestra series,” writes Scott Cantrell in Sunday’s (5/5) Dallas Morning News. Conductor Richard McKay “seized the moment to found the Dallas Chamber Symphony…. On Tuesday night, at what’s been renamed Moody Performance Hall … Erich Wolfgang Korngold’s Theme and Variations … was [the Dallas Chamber Symphony’s] delightful opener…. The theme is dispensed in lush harmonies drawing on Korngold’s years as one of Hollywood’s busiest … composers…. McKay shaped the romantic music quite warmly and kept quicker sections on their toes. Since 2013, the Dallas Chamber Symphony, in collaboration with Southern Methodist University’s Meadows School of the Arts, has sponsored an annual Dallas International Piano Competition. For this concert, Taiwan-born Hsin-Hao Yang, winner of the 2018 competition, joined the orchestra for the Liszt Piano Concerto No. 1…. His was a grandly romantic approach, with plenty of fury where called for, elsewhere generous, almost improvisatory freedom that certainly rang true to the score. McKay and the orchestra supplied sympathetic collaboration.” The orchestra also performed Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony.
