Ohio’s Columbus Symphony will open its 2019-20 season with a program entitled “Twisted 3” led by Music Director Rossen Milanov, featuring Stravinsky’s ballet Petrushka in a production involving puppets and the musicians and conductor as actors. Also performing on the program will be members of the Columbus-based BalletMet and Opera Columbus in music by Giacomo Puccini and Knudåge Riisager. The orchestra will perform a double bill of Paul Moravec’s oratorio Sanctuary Road, based on the writings of abolitionist William Still (unrelated to composer William Grant Still), and selections from Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess with soprano Laquita Mitchell, mezzo-soprano Zoie Reams, tenor Joshua Blue, baritone Malcolm Merriweather, and bass Dashon Burton. Bartók’s opera Bluebeard’s Castle will be performed in concert, with sets designed by glass artist Dale Chihuly. Also planned are Jesús Torres’s Tres Pinturas Velazqueñas, inspired by three Diego Velázquez paintings; organist Cameron Carpenter performing Saint-Saëns’s “Organ” Symphony No. 3 on the Ohio Theatre’s Robert Morton pipe organ; Missy Mazzoli’s Sinfonia; Octavio Vasquez’s Widows of the Living and the Dead; Handel’s Messiah; and Beethoven’s Symphony Nos. 7 and 9.
