“The Plainfield Symphony Orchestra (PSO), New Jersey’s oldest community symphony, mourns the death of Broadway legend Hal Prince, father of Charles Prince, PSO’s music director. Prince passed away on July 31 after a brief illness,” states an article in  Wednesday’s (9/31) TAP into Scotch Plains/Fanwood (New Jersey). Charles Prince has served as the orchestra’s music director since 2009. “ ‘Hal and his wife Judy were familiar faces at PSO concerts and after parties,’ said Plainfield Symphony Orchestra President Rebecca Perkins. ‘He clearly relished his role as “Charley’s father” and took great pride in watching his son conduct. Hal and Judy were generous supporters of PSO as well. His presence and support were an inspiration to all of us on the Board of Trustees and to the orchestra members. It was always thrilling to know that he was in the room. All of us at PSO send our condolences to Charles and his family.” Among the shows Harold Prince produced are West Side Story, Fiddler on the Roof, and Cabaret. He directed and produced composer-lyrist Stephen Sondheim’s Company, Follies, A Little Night Music, and Sweeney Todd, as well as a landmark reworking of Leonard Bernstein’s Candide. Prince directed Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Evita and The Phantom of the Opera, and directed at the Metropolitan Opera, Vienna State Opera, Houston Grand Opera, and elsewhere.
