Arizona’s Chandler Symphony Orchestra has announced the appointment of VANJA GJUMAR NIKOLOVSKI as music director, effective with the 2019-20 season. He succeeds founder and Music Director Emeritus Jack Herriman, who retired from the Chandler Symphony in May 2018 after 25 years. Nikolovski graduated with majors in conducting and composition from the Saints Cyril and Methods University of Skopje Faculty of Music, Macedonia. He specialized in orchestral and symphonic conducting at the Rimski-Korsakov State Conservatory in 1995-96, and earned a doctorate of music arts in conducting from Arizona State University in 2018. He was principal conductor of the Macedonian Opera and Ballet, guest conductor with the Macedonian Philharmonic Orchestra and the Macedonian Radio Choir, and conducted in cities including St. Petersburg, Belgrade, and Split, Croatia, as well as Washington D.C., San Diego, Los Angeles, and his hometown of Phoenix, Arizona. Nikolovski’s compositions have won Macedonian national awards, and have been performed in several European countries and the U.S.
