“Tanya Derksen, president of Orchestras Canada and of that country’s Regina Symphony Orchestra in Saskatchewan, will move into a new job with the Philadelphia Orchestra as of October 28,” writes Susan Elliott in Thursday’s (9/19) Musical America (subscription required). “The position … bears the title VP of Artistic Production…. Derksen, a pianist with an MBA, will ‘oversee personnel, production, operations, and touring,’ according to the orchestra. She will report to Executive Director Ryan Fleur, not to Artistic Planning VP Jeremy Rothman, who continues to work directly with Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin and CEO Matías Tarnopolsky. ‘Tanya is a passionate and dynamic arts leader who brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to this important role within the Orchestra,’ said Tarnopolsky in his comments. During her five years with Regina, Derksen is credited with broadening the orchestra’s scope to include a festival focused on social-change issues, new education programs and marketing strategies, and securing the organization’s largest individual gift of $1 million. Previously she was director of education and outreach for the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. She holds a BM from Brandon University and an MBA from the Asper School of Business at the University of Manitoba.”
