Jazz at Lincoln Center is accepting applications for the 2010-11 class of its Middle School Jazz Academy from January 23 to March 12, 2010. The academy, now in its fifth year, offers a year-long course of study in instrumental performance for New York City students in sixth, seventh, and eighth grades. To spotlight the beginning of the application period, fifteen members of the current MSJA class will perform a free showcase concert on January 23 at 1 p.m. in the Irene Diamond Education Center, Frederick P. Rose Hall, in New York City. Applicants for the 2010-11 program must have played an instrument for at least one year and live in one of New York’s five boroughs; preference is given to students from families with limited means. The tuition-free program includes weekly private lessons, a Saturday academy, and broader youth-development activities. Faculty and guest musicians include Wynton Marsalis, artistic director of Jazz at Lincoln Center, and members of the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.
