The South Dakota Symphony Orchestra’s Chamber Ensemble will be joined by members of the Lakota Music Project for a side-by-side concert on January 21. The concert, presented at the 2010 Governor’s Conference on Tourism in Pierre, South Dakota, will include performances of original compositions by Brent Michael Davids (of the Mohican tribe), the founding artistic advisor of the First National Composer Initiative with the American Composers Forum; and Jeff Paul, principal oboist of the SDSO. The performance will include highlights from last May’s Lakota Music Project concerts that toured across the state of South Dakota, including three different reservations. Members of the public may attend a free rehearsal at Riggs High School in Pierre, at noon on January 21. “This project exemplifies the universality of music,” said Barry LeBeau, liaison officer for the United Sioux Tribes and a member of the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe. LeBeau said of last May’s concerts, “When the drum and Lakota voices were joined by orchestra, the sound brought people to their feet”
