The Boston-based Longwood Symphony Orchestra and New England Conservatory have announced a concert to benefit Partners in Health’s relief efforts in Haiti following the devastating earthquake on January 12. The concert, “Symphonic Relief for Haiti,” is being held on January 31 at 12:30 p.m. at Boston’s Jordan Hall, with a goal of raising $250,000 to support ongoing relief efforts in Haiti. Among the performers scheduled to play at the concert are Paula Robison, Richard Stoltzman, faculty and students of all of Boston’s conservatories, and a 17-year-old Haitian violinist from NEC’s Preparatory School. Longwood is asking other music organizations with concerts scheduled for the weekend of January 30-31 to join the effort by making appeals from the stage, creating an event page on Partners in Health’s website www.pih.org with the title listed as “Symphonic Relief for Haiti,” inserting donation envelopes for PIH in program books, and directing donors to donate online. Longwood is also encouraging ensembles with no concerts scheduled that weekend to hold chamber-music cultivation events at the home of a sponsor, perform sponsored events in the Haitian community, or perform in a hospital in support of physicians traveling to Haiti, collecting funds in the lobby. All participating ensembles are asked to share information on how much is raised by sending an email to info@longwoodsymphony.org. The Longwood Symphony Orchestra, established in 1982, has a dual mission of community service and music performance, with most of its members drawn from Boston’s medical community.
