The Lafayette Symphony Orchestra in Indiana has announced that its 2020-21 season is scheduled to open on September 26 with a program entitled “Sounds of the Americas,” led by Music Director Nick Palmer. The concert will include Native American contemporary works, Brazilian sambas, and Panamanian dances. Other programs will feature music from the Roaring Twenties and a showcase of winners of the orchestra’s Keller Concerto Competition. The orchestra’s informal B-Side Series, performed in a nightclub setting, will feature three small ensembles: an all-percussion group, a three-piece tribute to Cole Porter, and a brass quintet. All ensembles are led by LSO musicians. The orchestra’s family-friendly concert will feature Gregory Smith’s The Orchestra Games—a composition that introduces audiences to the instruments of the orchestra via Olympics-themed musical challenges—along with music from Harry Potter films. LSO Executive Director Sara Mummey noted, “Approximately 25% of our programming for the 20-21 season is composed by women and/or people of color as we continue to strive to be better representatives of our community as well as leaders in the orchestral world. We are committed to making the LSO a place for everyone and the more inclusive nature of our programming speaks to that vision.”
