From the time that COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) first impacted the performing arts, The Hub has been tracking postponements and cancellations by U.S. and international orchestras, performing arts centers, and conservatories.
The League of American Orchestras is posting resources and information about coping with the pandemic as a service to the orchestra field. These resources include information about the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security package; discussion groups and one-on-one consultations for League members; guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and other authorities; and more. Find regularly updated resources and information on the League’s coronavirus preparedness site.
The following orchestras and music organizations have recently announced postponements, cancellations, and other shifts in concerts and related activities due to the global pandemic. Many orchestras, musicians, conservatories, and others are posting videos, recordings, and educational resources online free of charge; visit the League of American Orchestras’ new, regularly updated directory of digital programming at SymphonySpot.org. Note: orchestras and music festivals are revising their plans as the situation evolves; refer to individual websites and social media pages for the most up-to-date information. The Alexandria Symphony Orchestra (Virginia) has cancelled all performances in May and June in compliance with prohibitions on public gatherings through mid-June.
The Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra (Pennsylvania) has cancelled the remainder of its 2019-20 season, through May 17, as well as its July 1-5 Summer Concert Series. The organization has also cancelled the Harrisburg Symphony Youth Orchestra’s May 10 concert.
The Hershey Symphony (Pennsylvania) has postponed concerts and events due to the pandemic. The March 21 and April 25 performances have been postponed, with new dates to be announced. The May 2 fundraiser has been rescheduled to October 10.
The Kennett Symphony (Pennsylvania) cancelled all concerts and events from mid-March through May 3. The orchestra’s June 14 concert at Longwood Gardens is on hold, due to the closure of Longwood Gardens until Fall 2020.
The Lexington Philharmonic (Kentucky) has cancelled the rest of its 2019-20 season. Cancellations include full-orchestra concerts, Lexington Philharmonic Guild events, and in-school performances. Public radio station WEKU 88.9 will broadcast five previously recorded Lexington Philharmonic performances every two weeks through the end of June.
The Nittany Valley Symphony (State College, Pennsylvania) has cancelled its April 26 concert due to coronavirus concerns.
The Wilmington Symphony Orchestra (North Carolina) has announced cancellations and a postponement through May 10. Cancellations include regular season concerts, a free family concert, and a performance by the Wilmington Symphony Youth Orchestra and Junior Strings. The March 14 concert has been rescheduled to August 13.
