The Boston Modern Orchestra Project has released Gunther Schuller’s one-act opera The Fisherman and His Wife, recorded in 2015 with Odyssey Opera, on its BMOP/sound label. The next installment of the Cleveland Orchestra’s “A New Century” recordings of music performed during the orchestra’s 100th anniversary season has been released digitally and will be available in May as a three-disc set. The recording features Johannes Maria Staud’s Stromab, a world premiere, plus Strauss’s tone poem Aus Italian and music by Beethoven, Prokofiev, and Varèse. The Maryland Symphony and Music Director Elizabeth Schulze are featured on guitarist Sharon Isbin’s new recording of Chris Brubeck’s Affinity: Concerto for Guitar and Orchestra, to be released on the ZOHO label on May 22. The Omaha Symphony’s recording of its February 8, 2019 concert featuring the orchestra in arrangements of music by the alternative rock band Guster will be released on May 8. Entitled “OMAGAH:! Live with the Omaha Symphony,” the album features eleven tracks with the Omaha Symphony led by Principal Pops Conductor Ernest Richardson. The Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra has released a new recording featuring Jonathan Leshnoff’s Double Concerto for Clarinet and Bassoon and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 4, on the Reference Recordings label. Music Director Manfred Honeck conducts the orchestra, which features the orchestra’s principal clarinet, Michael Rusinek, and principal bassoon, Nancy Goeres, as soloists.
The Berlin Philharmonic and pianist Mitsuko Uchida are featured in a new three-CD set of Beethoven’s five piano concertos, conducted by Simon Rattle. David Hertzberg’s opera The Wake World, which premiered at Opera Philadelphia in 2017, has been released on the Tzadik label. Wet Ink Ensemble, a composer/performer collective, will release Alex Mincek’s Glossolalia and Sam Pluta’s Lines on Black on May 1 on Carrier Records.
