“As previously reported, the Salzburg Festival has been pared down to meet health and safety requirements … to 90 performances over 30 days,” writes Susan Elliott in Tuesday’s (6/9) Musical America. “Much of the 100th-anniversary programming originally planned for 2020 will be moved to 2021. The two main halls, Grosses Festspielhaus and Haus fur Mozart, will be limited to half-capacity…. To facilitate contract tracing, all tickets will have ticketholders’ names and are non-transferrable.… All artists must be tested for Covid-19 within four days of arrival…. Staff that come into proximity with artists will be tested as well and required to wear PPEs.… Gone are all the originally announced operas: Don Giovanni, Luigi Nono’s Intolleranza 1960, The Magic Flute, Tosca, starring Anna Netrebko, Don Pasquale with Cecilia Bartoli, and … the Britten War Requiem. In their place, with the Vienna Philharmonic as ‘pit band,’ are Elektra … and Così fan tutte…. The annual performance of Hugo von Hofmannsthal’s Jedermann (Everyman) … will take place as planned, as will a new play with music titled Everywoman, with music by Jens Baudisch and direction by Milo Rau. [Recital] artists include pianists Daniil Trifonov, András Schiff, Martha Argerich, and Igor Levit.”
