“Erie Philharmonic guest Concertmaster Emily Cornelius had a simple description of what it was like to perform together this weekend for the first time since March,” writes Valerie Myers in GoErie.com (Erie, PA). “The orchestra’s 19-member string section recorded the first concert of the 2020-21 ‘In Your Home’ season Saturday at Edinboro University’s Cole Memorial Auditorium. ‘In a word, it’s awesome,’ Cornelius said. The masked and socially distanced string section rehearsed at the auditorium with Music Director Daniel Meyer … before the performance was recorded. The philharmonic’s 2020-21 season will be virtual at least through the end of the year due to the coronavirus and ongoing Warner Theatre renovations. The Oktoberfest concert recorded this weekend will be broadcast by WQLN-TV and streamed for free viewing in October…. Meyer and the musicians wore formal black masks as they performed Saturday. Their audience was limited to a handful of production and recording staff. Musicians sat fanned out across the stage…. Four cameras recorded the performance from various angles…. ‘It’s very exciting to be able to make this happen,’ orchestra Executive Director Steve Weiser said.” Additional concerts will be recorded for free broadcasts and streaming in the coming weeks.
