“Black Americans remain significantly underrepresented in classical music. Conductor Roderick Cox wants to help change that,” writes Tim Diovanni in Thursday’s (10/15) Dallas Morning News. “This month, he makes his debut with the Fort Worth and Dallas symphony orchestras. This is just the latest stop in a busy international career. Cox, 33, served as associate conductor of the Minnesota Orchestra from 2016 to 2018 and has guest conducted top-notch orchestras, including the BBC Symphony, Cleveland Orchestra and Orchestre de Paris.” He was a participant in the League of American Orchestras’ 2018 Bruno Walter National Conductor Preview. “Conductors Jukka-Pekka Saraste from Finland and David Briskin from Canada were originally scheduled to lead the upcoming performances by the FWSO and DSO, respectively. But after learning that both musicians were unable to come due to travel restrictions, each orchestra separately reached out to Cox. Fort Worth Symphony president and CEO Keith Cerny said … that he selected Cox based on his winning the Solti Award and his ‘rapidly developing career in both symphonic and opera conducting.’ Peter Czornyj, the DSO’s vice president of artistic operations, [said] that Cox ‘has been on our list of conductors to invite to guest conduct the orchestra for some time.’ ”
