“The Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra has selected Andreas Delfs as its new music director,” writes Sarah Shay in Tuesday’s (1/26) Musical America (subscription required). “He will succeed Ward Stare, who exits at the end of this, his final season. A native of Flensburg, Germany, Delfs was for 12 years music director of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra before spending three years in the same position with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra. He served as general music director of Hannover, Germany (1995-2000), conducting the symphony orchestra and opera company. Prior to that, he was music director of the Bern Opera and resident conductor of the Pittsburgh Symphony under Lorin Maazel. An active guest conductor, he has led the RPO often in the past. ‘Working with him as a guest conductor over the years,’ noted RPO concertmaster Juliana Athayde, ‘the orchestra has already formed a special relationship with [him] with many memorable performances.’ Delfs will be the 13th music director in the organization’s 98-years, a history that includes such notable leaders as Erich Leinsdorf, David Zinman, and Mark Elder…. Delfs’ responsibilities as music director will also include overseeing the Rochester Philharmonic Youth Orchestra and partnering with orchestra management on artistic planning, programming, and music education.”
