The New England Conservatory Black Student Union’s annual celebration of the life and contribution of NEC alumna Coretta Scott King, and Black students and faculty throughout the Conservatory’s history, will take place on February 25. King, a soprano, received a degree in music education from NEC in 1954. In 2021, the celebration, known as Continuation of a Dream: Requiem, will take the form of a performance film that highlights the stories of students past and present. In addition, in the week leading up to the Requiem film, the BSU’s Zoe Cagan ‘21 MM and Nnamdi Odita-Honnah ‘22 MM will host multiple installments of “Black is Canon,” ten-minute Instagram/IGTV events celebrating music by Black composers. Featured composers in the segments, from February 19 to February 24, will include Julius Eastman, William Grant Still, Florence Price, Omar Thomas, Valerie Coleman, and Duke Ellington. In announcing the event, NEC stated, “Requiem creates a space in the Conservatory to truly reflect and give power to the Black lives that have been unjustifiably lost over centuries in America.” For more information, click here.
