“In a historic collaboration, members of the Dallas Symphony Orchestra and the Metropolitan Opera Orchestra will join in two concerts later this month at the Meyerson Symphony Center,” writes Scott Cantrell in Monday’s (4/12) Dallas Morning News. “A combined ensemble of about 50 musicians from each orchestra will perform Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 1 under DSO music director Fabio Luisi, who was principal conductor at the Met from 2011 to 2017. The performances, at 7:30 p.m. April 30 and May 1, will require adjustments to the DSO’s previously announced schedule. A second stage extension will be added to accommodate the largest orchestra to perform at the Meyerson in more than a year. As the DSO has been doing with its own musicians, the Met guests will receive daily COVID-19 tests. And the audience each evening will be limited to 400…. The concerts will be fundraisers for the Met Orchestra Musicians Fund and relief for Dallas-Fort Worth Musicians.… The New York orchestra has given no performances since March 2020…. Plans for the DSO-Met concerts came together in a mere five days, says DSO president and CEO Kim Noltemy…. DSO concertmaster Alexander Kerr anticipates ‘an inspiring and emotional event for all of us.’ ”
