“The Williamsburg Symphony Orchestra is moving into its 37th Masterworks season of fine music making, now in the Williamsburg Community Chapel, and the conclusion of the search for a new music director to replace Janna Hymes,” writes John Sheldon in Tuesday’s (9/14) Virginia Gazette (Williamsburg). “According to Carolyn Keurajian, executive director, ‘the season ahead is ambitious given the unknowns with the virus. Still, through new safety protocols and a bit of luck, the WSO will have all three remaining music director candidates fulfill their audition week. It will be a thrill to have the entire orchestra back on stage … and to gather feedback on the candidates from the musicians, audience and search committee.’ The search began in September 2019 but was cut short when COVID struck. The candidates who have already auditioned are Wesley Schulz, Paul Polivnick, Steven White and James Blachly…. The season opens Friday with candidate Andres Lopera … associate conductor of the Columbus Symphony and music director of the Columbus Youth Symphony Orchestra.” The remaining two candidates are Chia-Husan Lin, associate conductor of the Richmond Symphony (October) and Michael Butterman, music director of the Boulder Philharmonic, Shreveport Symphony Orchestra, and Pennsylvania Philharmonic (November). The new music director will be announced in January 2022.
