The Boston-based New England Philharmonic will open its 2021-22 season on October 16 with a concert led by composer in residence Eric Nathan, and featuring Nathan’s own the space of a door and Bernard Hoffer’s Fanfare in Honor of Richard Pittman, honoring the orchestra’s longtime music director, who stepped down after suffering a stroke in 2020. The concert at All Saints Parish in Brookline, Massachusetts will also include Hannah Kendall’s The Spark Catchers and Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite. The orchestra’s December 5 concert at Boston University’s Tsai Performance Center will be led by music director candidate Adam Kerry Boyles and feature music by Michael Gandolfi, Bernard Rands, Amy Beach, and Ravel. Concerts later in the season in Brookline and Boston will be led by music director finalists Nicholas DeMaison, Tianhui Ng, and Yoichi Udagawa, with music by composers including Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, Jonathan Bailey Holland, Sibelius, George Tsontakis, Yehudi Wyner, Chen Yi, Silvestre Revueltas, Sofía Rocha, Eric Nathan, TJ Cole, Witold Lutoslawski, Kathryn Salfelder, and Igor Santos.
