Kentucky’s Lexington Philharmonic has announced that its 2021-22 in-performance season will begin on November 20 with a program at Lexington’s Lyric Theatre and Cultural Arts Center led by guest conductor Kelly Corcoran and featuring George Walker’s Lyric for Strings, Michael Abels’s Delights and Dances for Strings, and Julia Perry’s Pastoral and Stabat Mater. The orchestra’s originally planned October 16 “Queens Rule” program, a collaboration with UK Opera Theatre, has been postponed to April 9, 2022 due to the pandemic. “Queens Rule” will feature a LexPhil-commissioned arrangement from Duke Ellington’s unfinished opera Queenie Pie and Haydn’s Symphony No. 85 (“The Queen”). Also planned this season are pandemic-delayed concerts in February and May led by the orchestra’s final two music director candidates, Julia Tai and Keitaro Harada. Repertoire at those concerts will include Missy Mazzoli’s River Rouge Transfiguration, Bloch’s Schelomo: Hebraic Rhapsody featuring cellist Gary Hoffman, Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 3 (“Scottish), Loren Loiacono’s Smothered by Sky, Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 3, and Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5. Masks will be required at all indoor performances, and the orchestra may require additional safety measures as needed; updates will be posted at the orchestra’s website.
