On November 7, the New Jersey Youth Symphony will present a concert of music by American composers for the organization’s season-opening program at the Patriots Theater at the War Memorial in Trenton. The program, “An American Salute: Honoring Our Veterans,” is free for all veterans. Music will include Copland’s Lincoln Portrait narrated by vocalist and playwright Diana Solomon-Glover and an audience singalong to the “Armed Forced Medley” and “America the Beautiful.” NJYS Youth Orchestra Conductor Simon Lipskar and Artistic Director and Principal Conductor Helen H. Cha-Pyo will conduct the Youth Orchestra and Youth Symphony in works by Leonard Bernstein, Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, and Augustus Hailstork. George Marriner Maull, artistic director of the New Jersey-based Discovery Orchestra, will lead the young musicians in Morton Gould’s American Salute.
