The New York Philharmonic has released the first two episodes of RECONNECT, a three-part series of virtual Young People’s Concerts exploring how composers can reconnect with the people and places they miss through music. Episode 1 features cellist Sheku Kanneh-Mason performing Dvořák’s Cello Concerto with the Philharmonic in November 2021, conducted by Simone Young; the episode includes a discussion between Kanneh-Mason and Young about Dvořák, who wrote the concerto while living in New York City. Episode 2 focuses on Anna Clyne’s Within Her Arms, the work that opened the Philharmonic’s 2021–22 season. Clyne and poet Mahogany L. Browne, who also appeared in those concerts, speak about how music and poetry can help us make sense of and communicate big emotions, interspersed with footage of the Philharmonic’s performance of the piece. Episode 3 will spotlight Devon Lee and Larissa Lakner, two Philharmonic Very Young Composers. Episodes are available to watch free and on demand on NYPhil+ and at nyphil.org/reconnect.
