“A number of orchestras have recently announced new players,” writes Susan Elliott in Wednesday’s (2/9) Musical America (subscription required). “The Pittsburgh Symphony will have two new violists as of next spring. Sean Juhl, who is currently working on his BM degree at the Juilliard School, starts in June, and Aaron Mossburg, principal viola in the Rochester Philharmonic, where he has been since 2016, starts in April. Juhl has won an impressive array of competitions; Mossburg, who holds a BM from the Cleveland Institute of Music, has performed with orchestras in Cleveland, Cincinnati, and Indianapolis…. The Minnesota Orchestra has added one member to its bass section and promoted another. Kathryn Nettleman, with the orchestra since 2009, has been named associate principal bass, a post she has held in the past in an ‘acting’ capacity…. New to the section as of next season is Kyle Sanborn, current assistant principal bass of the Calgary Philharmonic. He holds an MM from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music; prior to Calgary, he was a fellow at the New World Symphony. The Detroit Symphony Orchestra has added Cole Randolph, currently one of the DSO’s two African American Orchestra Fellows, to its cello section … Randolph is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Madison…. Violinists Elizabeth Furuta and Daniel Kim will arrive at the DSO in fall of 2022. Furuta is currently with the Cincinnati Symphony and before that played in the Omaha Symphony…. Kim is at the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where he is a second-year masters’ student.”
