Erie Philharmonic’s free concert of Ellington, Hailstork, Still to be broadcast and streamed

The Erie Philharmonic has announced that its free, in-person April 13 concert at Pennsylvania’s Edinboro University will also be recorded for broadcast and streaming on May 26 and 29 on WQLN PBS, WQLN.org, and Facebook Live. The jazz/blues-themed concert will feature Duke Ellington’s Black, Brown and Beige Suite, William Grant Still’s Symphony No. 1 (“Afro American”), Adolphus Hailstork’s Piano Concerto with soloist Stewart Goodyear, and Edinboro University composer William Alexander’s Percussion Duet. The program is the first concert in the orchestra’s free “Fascinating Spaces” series, created following last summer’s free, 17-concert “In Your Hometown” tour in nearby communities, away from the Warner Theatre, the orchestra’s main performance venue. Footage from the April 13 concert will be repurposed for the Philharmonic’s free virtual youth concert at regional schools; for both the televised concert and virtual youth concert, the orchestra will also explore the life of composer Harry T. Burleigh, a native of Erie, with performances by baritone Eddie Pleasant, a Burleigh expert, and Erie Philharmonic cellist Eri Snowden-Rodríguez and pianist Beth Etter.
