In Sunday’s (10/3) San Antonio Express-News (Texas), Jessica Belasco writes, “After a three-year hunt for a new music director, who could blame the San Antonio Symphony for going all-out to welcome Sebastian Lang-Lessing at its ‘Meet the Maestro’ concert Saturday night? The Texas-sized celebration at the Majestic Theatre included a slideshow of photos of Lang-Lessing narrated by symphony CEO Jack Fishman, performances by the Children’s Chorus of San Antonio and the San Antonio Symphony Mastersingers, and a champagne toast. For sale were T-shirts and mugs emblazoned with the German conductor’s image and the declaration ‘The SLL era begins.’ … The sold-out concert, which kicked off the symphony’s 71st season, was designed to introduce Lang-Lessing before the symphony’s classical series begins Friday, although Lang-Lessing himself won’t return to the Majestic stage until January. … Mayor Julián Castro took the stage to announce a three-year, $225,000 grant from the Tobin Endowment to sponsor a music director chair for the new conductor. The symphony will move to the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts when it opens in 2013.”
